A distorted perception of beauty: the influence of the media on body image In today's society, young women are developing a distorted perception of beauty to due to the effects of the media: advertising, magazines, television and films. Nearly every image in the media features an image of a young woman altered almost to the point of making her unrecognizable. It seems that every image of a young woman is the media's "perfect lie", that is, almost no image is pure or untouched. This perfect lie negatively impacts young women's perception of their appearance, style and body. These false images cause serious consequences on the physical and emotional aspects of young women, negatively influencing the way they perceive themselves. Today's media images in advertising and magazines give young women a false and inadequate view of their body image. Dove's billboard campaign video template and Time Lapse Photoshop video represent the negative effects media has on body image across the country. Media images play on young girls' insecurities and make them feel like they need to look like the woman in the photo. Dove's Model to Billboard Campaign video and Time Lapse Photoshop demonstrate the process of creating the "perfect woman." The videos show the editing process used by companies to create the image of a young woman that all other women will strive to look like. This process creates a false image. The woman in the photo is not actually real; it has been edited to look perfect and flawless. Editing companies completely change almost every feature of the woman, almost making her unrecognizable. Dove's Model to Billboard campaign video features a woman being photographed for a makeup product. After the photo is taken, the video shows the editing process before... halfway down the paper... which looks like an eating disorder. Many women will eat very little, or sometimes go days without eating, so that they can look like the woman in the photo. Eating disorders cause a variety of health problems that can cause enormous harm to a young woman's life. Media images of a woman with an almost unrealistic body type do not help solve the problem of eating disorders. The influence of the media causes women to develop self-esteem problems. Many women lose confidence in their appearance, which leads them to think they are not good enough or pretty enough as the women in the photos in magazines and advertisements. These kind of media issues prevent women from living a healthy and happy life because they are always worried about their appearance, body and style because they don't look like that girl featured in Teen Vogue, People Magazine or Cosmopolitan.
