Working hours from dawn to dusk without interruption. The minutes seemed like hours and the hours never ended. The days were tiring and it seemed like an endless world. Hours passed and I received her usual phone call informing me that she would be home later than expected. Without any choice, I was forced to stay and cancel any personal plans I had for the rest of the day. There was never a set time when she would come home so it was a constant waiting game. It varied from day to day, and the days became later and later. Doing this job has caused my personal life to drift apart. I never had time for myself, my family or my friends. According to the author Eric Schlosser also in his essay “Behind the Counter” points out that “Managers try to ensure that each worker is employed less than 40 hours per week… avoiding any overtime payments” (57). This means that they are working too hard to the point where they will not be able to receive any type of benefits. Extended hours with no benefits have left me with little to no personal time.
