According to Vasquez (2008), the rate of people with mental illnesses will rise to 176 million people in 2010, up from 114 million people in 1990. As this rate increases there will be a consequent increase in discrimination and abuse against these people. Mentally ill people can be considered a vulnerable group in our society, and discrimination and abuse against these people usually exists because other people take advantage of their vulnerability. Not only are people discriminated against on a social level, but they are also susceptible to physical abuse by people who do not fully understand mental illness or by people who belong to a culture that says people with mental illness are evil. Although there has been an emergency of community care for mentally ill people, people can still abandon their relatives to the healthcare system. The result is that the government is burdened with caring for these people for fear of the social stigma attached to mental illness. In Jamaica, people with mental illnesses can face discrimination and abuse, which can have economic implications on the healthcare system. Additionally, people who suffer from mental illness in the workplace may face ostracism from colleagues even if they have a minor mental problem.
