Topic > Should the United States reinstate the draft? - 3157

Since World War II, the last war to gain full American support, the percentage of American citizens drafted into the US military has declined significantly. The United States is one of the major military powers in the world today; American soldiers are engaged in many multi-theater positions, consequently dispersing troops across various regions of the world. Given that only one in ten citizens served in the U.S. military, American knowledge of military conditions is rapidly declining along with the national harmony that complements that knowledge. Therefore, the understanding that American security is closely associated with a formidable military has never resonated with most modern American citizens. While anti-war activists may denounce conscription as unconstitutional, it must be reinstated to solidify what it means to be an American citizen, boost the economy by providing jobs, and unite the American people with greater national security. Overall, restoring the draft Constitution would solidify what it means to be an American citizen. Often the richest and most privileged people can request exemption from service, which makes the representation of soldiers in combat composed of less privileged citizens. With mandatory conscription, any American citizen, male or female, between the ages of 18 and 26 can be recruited into the armed forces. In fact, only 4 members of the 107th Congress who voted for the war in Iraq had children serving there. Politicians would know what it feels like to have loved ones at war, instead of speaking freely about wartime without experiencing it in any way.1 Furthermore, Americans believe that public support for war in foreign countries is not strong because soldiers who fight are p. ..... half of the sheet ...... e. The points that the author (a former recruit himself) makes to support his argument by referring to his own experiences and including statistics, he has obviously researched thoroughly before referring to them in his article. Rangel introduced a statement stating that people should participate in compulsory conscription to relieve the burden of military service from groups of people who serve because they have to. I believe there is enough evidence to make this article a legitimate source of information, for my research paper. It's clearly an opinion, but it's quite objective. There is no insult against the other party. I can use this article as a primary source of information, because this author himself was a former recruit and knows the process that goes into implementing the draft. It has enriched my knowledge on the subject.
