Topic > Prejudice - 1799

We had a lot of thieves on campus last term. So during the night there were many policemen walking along High Street to do their best to protect the students. However, most policemen tended to stop blacks and ask them where they were going and why they were out so late at night. Why do people suspect blacks? There must be a reason. Some people might say that most students reported being attacked by blacks. But several cases proved that the thieves were white. In my opinion, prejudice could be the reason why the police suspect blacks who attend school. “Prejudice is a negative attitude towards an entire category of people, often an ethnic or racial minority.” (Schaefer, 2008, p. 248) Even though the emancipation of slaves occurred hundreds of years ago, biases and prejudices still remain in this society. We may hate our roommate for talking loudly and not showering. And it is considered a prejudice. However, if we stereotype him or her based on race or religion, it is a form of prejudice. It's true that we tend to define other people by our perspective. If prejudices form, they can influence people's behaviors. But what can prejudices lead to? How does prejudice form? And are there methods we can use to reduce bias? When we talk about prejudice, we can think first of all about discrimination and ethnocentrism, which are the negative effects of prejudice. Prejudices can cause discrimination and can arise from ethnocentrism. Furthermore, prejudice and bias arise from topics we are unfamiliar with. And we can reduce prejudice. Prejudice can turn into discrimination. For winter break I went to Boston to visit my father's friend. He has two sons called Joe and Lu and they both attend elementary school.
