As I listened to and read the commentary “The Dangers of Indifference” by Elie Wiesel, I found the video and article very inspiring. The composition made me think about everyday issues to which we are indifferent. In this essay I will discuss the topic of child abuse in our society and how society deals with this problem. The main points of this essay will focus on the different types of abuse. What is happening, how children deal with it and how society reacts. First of all I'll start with what's happening and where it's happening. Child abuse happens everywhere, in some places more serious than others. Any form of abuse should be brought to light. Whether it is physical, mental or sexual abuse, cruelty is occurring in every corner of the world. Most third world countries have no laws on child labor, nor the extent to which they can be punished. Even though there are laws in the country, what happens to adults may not land them in trouble like I think they should. Nowadays you can physically, mentally and sexually abuse and neglect your child with minimal punishment. Most abuse also happens behind closed doors. The person who takes care of them usually threatens the children if they say they will tell anyone. I believe online child abuse statistics are lower than they actually are because children are afraid to talk about their situation. In this second paragraph I will talk about what abuse does to children. Some might say that one type of exploitation is worse than others when it comes to teenagers. I feel that no abuse should occur. After years of abuse, children may have low self-esteem, feel like they have no way out, and may even attempt suicide. It is very helpless... middle of paper... to let this happen to the children of the world. There are many foundations trying to help raise awareness on this topic, but none are really moving in this direction. As a community we must come together and address this issue head on. Trying to defeat child abuse requires the help of local police departments, local schools and recreation centers. I believe that if our community opened up a safe environment for teenagers to escape to, even if just for a few hours, it could save a life. Having adults to open up to really makes a difference in the growth of children's lives, especially if they are experiencing abuse. In conclusion, I hope this essay has moved you in some way and made you really think about indifference. I hope you can take some time out of your day to do some research on the terrifying number of children who are abused and perhaps donate to the cause..
