As the story progresses, compassion proves to be the story's most important theme, one of the many traits Mobile seems to lack. The absence of compassion towards black people, outsiders, and poverty-stricken people shows how one-sided people are capable of being. The story of To Kill a Mockingbird is set in the small southern town of Mobile Alabama during the Great Depression. As the story progresses, it becomes clear that the citizens are set in their ways and full of prejudices. Being a Southern city, there was still a lot of controversy over black equality in the mid-1930s. The difference in social status that blacks and whites have is clearly shown in the book.
