Personal Statement Application to the Master's Program in Infections and Immunity I started high school in 2003. Like every other student, I was aiming for the so-called high and important careers and my first choice was Medicine while my second choice was Nursing. This led me to volunteer in a hospital right after high school, but after the results came out, I did not qualify for the Medicine program as a government-sponsored student, but was selected for the General Science program. I didn't know what the program entailed when I enrolled in college, but I positively embraced it and decided to make it work for me. I did my research on people who had previously gone through the same program and had been successful and from the results I chose those who were accessible and made them my mentors. By interacting with them I gained knowledge from their experiences and learned a different perspective of medicine compared to that of biomedical research. Today I consider general science as the best thing that fate brought me. My interests in science grew and this was the foundation of my academic success. From General Sciences I chose the Biological Sciences option and from Biological Sciences I chose Zoology and Biochemistry. I will graduate in December 2013 with honors in a Bachelor's degree with a specialization in Zoology and a specialization in Biochemistry. I have developed a thorough understanding of general science, what it entails and its career prospects, giving me enough reasons to want to pursue it further. My ultimate academic goal is to earn a PhD. in infectious diseases, a master's degree will help me explore and narrow my interests on the area of infectious diseases that I will study in depth. As a general science...... middle of paper ......I work mainly in hospitals as a way to give something back to society. All these experiences have shaped me to be a well-rounded person and therefore I plan to continue my involvement in extracurricular activities as I continue my studies. As for long-term plans, I hope to venture into the unexploited area of Tungiasi and help broaden knowledge about the disease and develop control measures. A master's degree in Infections and Immunity will not only help me advance my career, but it will help me be part of the solution to the world's health problems. It will remain relevant to me especially because I am a citizen of Kenya, a developing country where infectious diseases have a great impact on the social, medical and economic aspects of life because they affect both humans and animals. It puts me in a better position to achieve my goals while reaching people.
