The expansion of health technology has been a hot political topic since the conception of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). While innovative healthcare technology can certainly improve the quality and efficiency of care, it has limitations. What is important to learn from these conversations about HIT, however, is that policymakers realize the breadth of technology in our healthcare system and the desperate need for policy reform. As previously mentioned, one of the major implications associated with the expansion of health technology is simply the ambiguity in the outcomes of HIT initiatives. Especially since the implementation of the PPACA, there has been a push towards evidence-based medicine, and health technology is no exception.
