It is not a race, an ethnicity, a culture, a social class, a particular class, a gender, a family, a lifestyle, or even a level of instruction. It concerns us all. Autism may also fall under autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which means it encompasses a set of characteristics that vary based on the severity of presentation (Boyd & Shaw, 2010). Another definition that leads to the understanding of this disease for autism spectrum disorder “is a serious neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs the child's ability to communicate and interact with others. This includes limited and repetitive behaviors, interests and activities” (Mayo Clinic). Autism is the most common and most missed diagnosed disorder. Autism is considered a spectrum because each person has their own personal traits and characteristics. “Diagnosing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be difficult, as there is no medical test, such as a blood test, to diagnose the disorders. They observe the child's behavior to make a diagnosis” (www.cdc.gov). Some parents are in denial about this disease and will not receive the early intervention that could help. We need to educate as much as possible about autism. Autism is a lifelong condition and requires early diagnosis, intervention and therapy.
