In the service learning opportunity, I was able to be a part of the United Food Bank, an organization that locates food and distributes it among local communities in the Arizona. During the activity I was assigned to the packaging and weighing line. My job was to make sure all the items matched their respective categories, weigh the products together up to the corresponding weight limit for that category, label them correctly with the date, and then place the food on the pallet where the weight limit had been assigned. My work for the organization was overall very physically demanding, but despite all the hard work, social interactions were always happening around me. According to Andersen, Taylor, and Logio (2015), a social interaction represents “behavior between two or more people that is given meaning” (p. 423). The social interactions that occurred that day should be from the group's first arrival at the facility until the beginning of the activity. The meaning of the behaviors shown showed me that true character is still a characteristic of society, and even a group that barely knew each other could come together and join the fight against hunger. Now the behaviors shown during the activity should be thoughtful, kind, loyal, thoughtful and enthusiastic. People who display these types of behaviors during the interaction should be faculty members, organizational members and students of the organization loved what they did and, regardless of the weekend, wanted to positively spread their passion among all of us. Members gave advice on how to better perform an action, a helping hand during the activity and even information about themselves for help create a better understanding of their goals... middle of paper... even as they were able to provide nearly four thousand pounds of food to those in poverty. Now, if you put that in perspective, if each class at Chandler Gilbert Community College did about three hours of food bank work, it could easily equate to about a hundred thousand pounds of food for those in poverty in the valley. Some questions currently on my mind that were not before, would have to be what our federal government is doing about the issue, why social norms harm organizations like the food bank, and how can people within society believe that an individualistic approach is the best. When people in the society around them are in poverty due to the corrupt social class system we have today. This experience has changed my life significantly, I want to engage more with non-profit organizations to help fight poverty and make social equality possible for all.
