The government plays an important role in our safety, but many people think they go too far. Recently, people have been thinking more and more about how much involvement the government should have when it comes to food regulations. Some people think that government involvement in food regulation would greatly help obesity rates, while others think that the country's obesity rates would show little to no improvement. While there is no cause of obesity and no government regulation can alter someone's lifestyle choices, the government should implement some regulations by implementing programs to educate and encourage citizens to lead healthier lives and by requiring companies to list full disclosure of ingredients on their products. Because obesity has many causes, people do not think that the government's enforcement of food regulations will influence healthy decisions. In Charles Baum's article, “In the Fight Against Obesity, Stronger Government is the Wrong Weapon,” he explains why the government would not help reduce obesity rates by enacting food regulations. In the article he states: “Obesity is the result of excessive calorie consumption. And as our research has shown, people find different ways to do this” (Baum). Baum says other causes of obesity, such as people quitting smoking and not getting regular exercise, will keep obesity rates high even if the government introduces food regulations. However, having simpler and healthier food and exercise choices could increase people's healthy behaviors. In the article “The Experts: What Role Should Government Play in Fighting Obesity?” Many experts debate their opinions on how much involvement the government should have in fighting obesity. Cassella states that the government gives...... half of paper ......lf. Although citizens themselves have to make the choice to have a healthier life, the government could give them the push they need to start living a healthier life. Because most healthy foods seem to cost more, some people feel they can't afford them. If the government made it easier for ordinary people to get the healthy food they need, it could reduce obesity rates. Additionally, many people don't have daily access to exercise. The government cannot expect to see a low obesity rate if it does nothing to solve the problem.
