Topic > W. Weatherford, J. Stephenson, L. Shinn: Whom Shall...

In the inaugural addresses of Willis Weatherford, John Stephenson, and Larry Shinn, the sixth, seventh, and eight presidents, the ethics of these three men are examined. Within these speeches, each president states what they believe are the most important aspects of Berea College. In the next paragraphs, three of the five aspects considered most important will be defined: race, region, religion, gender and class. Willis Duke Weatherford, the sixth president of Berea College, began in his inaugural address by saying that the ideals of Berea should be carried forward and expanded into the future. He dedicated these ideals to all Bereans: academic quality, education for Appalachian youth, interracial education, dignity of work, and the moral and spiritual growth of youth for Christian service. Weatherford discussed the need for clear goals for a liberal arts college. He said his first major goal is to offer an education tailored to the needs of the changing Appalachians. Weatherford explained that some felt Berea should follow the “mainstream of American higher education,” but if that meant abandoning Berea's commitment to service to students with special needs and spiritual growth, then he was not willing to follow the “mainstream”. Weatherford said: “But I am not satisfied with the single criterion of necessity, not when we run a college to train the leaders of tomorrow, we should continue and even increase our standards of ability required to accommodate students.” (2)” Weatherford also emphasized that providing and offering an education to African Americans is important and that it should continue to prepare all students for leadership. Weatherford's second goal was to emphasize leadership education.......half of the paper......the goal of deep learning was one that everyone at Berea should engage in ( 1-6). Each president, in their inaugural address, provided three clear aspects that they believed were most important in Berea College students. In Weatherford's speech, the three most important aspects to him were region, race and religion. In Stephenson's speech, he found that class, religion and region are the three most important aspects. Shinn believed that religion, region, and race were the three most important aspects. Each of these presidents has been very firm in their beliefs and has provided aspects that have been clearly recognized. Works Cited Shinn, Larry D. “The Challenge of Deep Learning.” Address.
