No longer primarily concerned with providing for their family, they now need to spend money to feed their addictive tendencies. They will spend whatever money it takes to get what they need and worry about their dependents afterwards. How cold and callous it seems to bleed these unfortunate victims for everything they have and claim it is for their own good. True compassion would suggest ensuring that people with addictions still have enough food for them
