Reconstruction was a failure because most of the southern region rejected all forms of equality and construction while the black people wanted the right to their own freedom and to their land. Looking back you can compare and contrast how southern and northern people treated people regarding color. During the reconstruction period not everyone had the same idea of moving forward as a country, but instead tried to find ways to re-establish the laws of more southern lifestyles. Only together, as a whole, can they move forward, but until this is put in place nothing will go smoothly and stable. The question is asked several times throughout history with the question: what is freedom? Fredrick Douglas in his book “What the Black Man Wants”, says “What is freedom? It is the right to choose one's job..." (Doc 2). Do people of color really receive this so-called “freedom” when they are still held back by society simply because of their color?
