A better South Africa for the new South Africa The fight against apartheid is not an anecdote about some blacks living under a repressive government; it is the story of millions of black people who suffered tremendously under the oppressive classification system of the National Party. It is a story of bloodshed, suffering and tears. It's a story that serves as a painful reminder of the lengths a group of people would go to to ensure the purity of their race was preserved. The struggle against apartheid is a story defined by race. Growing up in Soweto wasn't easy. My first childhood memory of white people was watching them shoot black people with rubber bullets; I remember seeing the agony on a woman's face after coming into contact with tear gas. In my eyes, white South Africans were absolutely unfeeling animals. My perception of white South Africans was based on a stereotype and casual observations that soldiers of the South African National Defense Force had created among many black people.
