The role of Eve The female gender has come a long way. They conquered and triumphed over gender discrimination in society. A woman is now a symbol of strength and love. It hasn't always been this way. The poem “Adam and Eve” by Ani Difranco illustrates how unfairly a woman can be treated. The poem makes clear the arrogance of men, putting women in a position where they feel unappreciated. Additionally, the story “Boys and Girls” by Alice Munro outlines the stereotypes of being a girl. The story is about how a little girl and her brother were treated differently because of their gender. It is believed that the male gender is better and more elegant. Men are more respected in society. A man is given power and dominance over a woman. When the narrators, who are both women, try to act on their emotions, they are discriminated against. Narrators in both poetry and story are constantly reminded of their place in society. Furthermore, they know what role they should play as “women”. Society uses the word “female” like any other dirty word. “You can't do that because you're a girl.” In the story “Boys and Girls” the narrator defines the word girl. “It was a definition, always touched upon with emphasis, with reproach and disappointment.” (Munro 144). The narrator feels like a failure. No one seems to appreciate her, so she feels like she's letting everyone down. She has no self-esteem for herself. People would agree that men have an innate advantage over women. Some women are considered strong. They may even appear to possess the characteristics of a man. Yet they are only aspirants who want to be like a man. Women's emotions are heightened. Men, on the other hand, are capable of resisting terrible situations. “Emotionality remains a strong and independent force in human affairs, influencing perceptions, coloring memories, binding people together through attraction, keeping them apart through hatred, and regulating their behavior through guilt, shame and pride” (Lively, Heise 115). People act on their emotions. Sometimes their actions are unreasonable. The poem "Adam and Eve" shows the reader what the narrator's emotion is. Psychology is the state of a human being's mind and how it affects him as an individual. Self-esteem is defined as the level of confidence people have in themselves or in their abilities and skills. Emotions can trigger psychological instability. In the poem “Adam and Eve,” the narrator is going crazy. He connects his situation to events in the Bible. "I like apples and I'm not afraid of snakes." (Difranco 1256). He is suffering from anxiety. It causes her to hallucinate that she is Eve and lives in the Garden of Eden with her husband Adam. He also apologizes numerous times to the man even though he has done nothing wrong. His psyche is confused about what is right and wrong. The man succeeds in his attempt to torture her mind and ridicule her gender. This makes her think that everything is her fault. “When things go wrong, our poor (low) self-esteem can lead us to make self-destructive decisions such as tolerating mistreatment or harming ourselves or others in an attempt to make others love us or numb the pain. of our own uselessness." (Chowaniec 400). Men have the advantage of command. This places them in a position of greater control, disadvantaging women. “For primitive man, selfishness, as instinctive self-preservation, was necessary if the individual was to survive the rigors of his existence; but since the brain led man to
