What is there to say about a mother's love? Some say it is a bond that can never be broken or that a mother's love is unconditional. The mother, Kate, in “All My Sons” still intensely believes that her son Larry is still alive. We learn a lot about Kate throughout the show. We know she's superstitious from the way she looks at dreams and horoscopes, smart from the way she knows what's going on and that Joe is always asking her what to do, and she kind of manipulates the people who bring up Larry's death or a sensitive topic comes up. Kate could also be called naive for knowing the truth for so long but not accepting it. In the first few minutes of the show we hear that Frank Lubey is writing a horoscope for Larry that Kate has asked him to do. Kate wants to know if November 25, the day Larry disappeared, was her good day or not. After 3 years Kate turns to the stars for answers about Larry's disappearance. Most people read their horoscopes just for fun instead of judging whether someone is dead or not. Further on page 17 lines 4-10 of “All My Sons” Kate says: “…everything decides to happen at the same time. This month is his birthday; his tree falls and Annie arrives. Everything that happened seems to come back. I was right down in the cellar and what did I trip over? His baseball glove. I haven't seen him for a century." To Kate these are signs but, as we find out later, we know that these signs could mean the opposite of what she thinks they mean. In my opinion, the way he interprets these signs is that this month is his birthday and his memorial tree goes out to symbolize that they no longer need it because he is alive. Annie comes to visit too and Kate takes this... middle of paper... accepts nothing other than the fact that Larry will one day walk up the driveway and finally come home. Kate did so many things during this play, that while reading it I thought it was a little crazy. Only in the fact that he kept Larry's room the same, with all his shirts clean and his shoes shined. But once again we have to put ourselves in his shoes and say “how long would I wait for my missing son to come home?” Personally, the fact that Kate wasn't ready to move on after receiving the news of Larry's passing, that she created the idea within herself that there might still be a chance for Larry to return home. This is a connection between a mother and a child that makes her believe, connections that not even death can break. This is a mother's unconditional love.
