When collecting data for a grounded theory, the theorist collects data, codes, and analyzes the data that facilitates the emergence of the theory. But in ethnography the aim is not to generate theories; rather interested in describing the cultural meaning behind a specific idea by giving additional emphasis to precise characteristics of the culture and applying sampling for the purpose. In Grounded Theory, before the data collection phase, researchers do not consult the literature before conducting fieldwork to avoid being influenced by the literature, even if they consult a lot of literature that is not directly related to the research topic. Instead, ethnographers can consult the conceptual literature before conducting the study in which the problem to be studied is presented to get an idea of ​​what the research is about and how the researcher can proceed further.
