Soliloquy of the Cloister of the SpaniardsThe poem doesn't even begin with a word, it begins with the sound, it simply growls. When the speaker sees someone pass by and calls it "the horror of the heart" - in which horror is used as a strong word for hate. He says if hate could kill, Brother Lawrence would be dead. So it sounds like the speaker is responding to Brother Lawrence or thinking about what he would have said. As the narrator and Brother Lawrence sit together: Brother Lawrence says to him, "Salve tibi" is Latin for "Hello to you," then they continue with some small talk until: The speaker mocks Brother Lawrence's interest in 'learn the Latin name for "parsley" by asking what the "Greek name" for "Pig Snout" is. He is making fun of Brother Lawrence because he is too proud of his belongings. It sounds like the speaker is using the real "we." The narrator introduces the nuns as they wash themselves on the riverbank and tell stories. Brother Lawrence likes to take a look. He even compares Brother Lawrence's lust for these nuns to that of a "Barbary race"....
