Topic > Summary of Anne Boleyn - 2486

On May 15, 1536, Anne was accused of adultery, incest, and treason and was sentenced to death. During the trial Anne behaved calmly and clearly and denied all charges against her. She didn't fight her accusers, she didn't get angry, she didn't yell and scream, she simply denied her accusations and accepted her fate. Historians find themselves deeply pondering how this reportedly outspoken, intelligent, and manipulative witch calmly denied the allegations and had no outrageous words to share. If ever there was a time when a woman couldn't hold her tongue, this would surely be it. Which leads them to ask: does history convey the truth? Do we ever know that what we are reading has any weight or resemblance to the truth? Then she religiously opened his mind by placing the Bible in his hands and sharing passages that she thought would benefit him. While it is possible that King Henry VIII would have ousted Catherine one way or another, the creation of the Church of England and their separation from the Roman Church falls equally on the shoulders of Anne Boleyn. Whether he was manipulated into life or innocently landed there, it came about because of the king's love and desire to make her his legal wife and, ultimately, because of his choice to accept the situation. He is absolutely the main catalyst for the English. He said what he believed and he believed what he said. She was treated by the king as if she were his wife for many years before Anne even consummated the affair. Something he only gave in to in 1532, six years into the affair and when his divorce from Catherine was imminent. He courted her fiercely, sending her love letters and declaring and promising his love and loyalty in their pages. The two were secretly married on 25 January 1533. It was not until 23 May 1533 that Thomas Cranmer declared Henry and Catherine's marriage legitimately concluded. The Pope, being the head of the Roman Catholic Church, refused to support the remarriage. Following the Pope's refusal, the King broke away from the Roman Catholic Church and joined the Anglican Church, declaring it the Church of England and himself as its head. This made people hate Anne Boleyn even more, blaming her for her influence causing the king to leave the Roman Catholic Church. She gave birth to only one surviving child, Elizabeth, born in September 1533. All of her other pregnancies ended in miscarriages. Wanting a son as an heir, King Henry grew tired of Anne Boleyn and she was accused of conspiracy to murder the king and adultery. During the trial she calmly declared her innocence and remained calm when they found her guilty. He didn't fight when it was time to die.
