According to textbook reading, there are two types of research, basic and applied. Crawford (2016) states that “basic research is conducted to advance collective knowledge about a topic within a field of study, and applied research occurs when research is conducted to solve a practical problem within a field of study (pp. 48).” In chapter three of Crawford's (2016) book, the “Goals and Methods of Psychology” are discussed (pp. 45-48). This chapter brought to Ambier's attention that psychological research had three goals: description, explanation, and prediction (Crawford 2016).
