According to textbook reading, there are two types of research, basic and applied. Crawford (2016) states that “basic research is conducted to advance collective knowledge about a topic within a field of study, and applied research occurs when research is conducted to solve a practical problem within a field of study (pp. 48).” In chapter three of Crawford's (2016) book, the “Goals and Methods of Psychology” are discussed (pp. 45-48). This chapter brought to Ambier's attention that psychological research had three goals: description, explanation, and prediction (Crawford 2016). Ambier was first introduced to APA style in the first module, and the information she learned in this module and all subsequent modules helped her when composing her first writing assignment.
