Female offenders experience a variety of mental health issues, commonly including depression and anxiety (NICIS). Studies have indicated that women in drug treatment programs also tend to report mental health problems such as physiological distress and post-traumatic stress disorder that are related to substance abuse. I hope that the therapeutic community's drug treatment will in some way influence Doe to admit not only that he has a substance abuse problem, but that he needs help for poor impulse control. Just as drug treatment is provided in the detention center, offenders like Doe are entitled to receive various treatments for their mental health problems. Three reasons to provide mental health care in a correctional setting: 1. Reduce the disabling effects of serious mental illnesses and maximize each inmate's ability to voluntarily participate in correctional programs. 2. decrease unnecessary human suffering caused by mental illness. 3. Help keep prison staff, prisoners, volunteers and visitors (NICIS) safe. Correctional residences such as the detention center are where most mentally ill offenders are located as there is no place to place these mentally ill offenders due to the state budget
