In today's news, it is not uncommon for accidents to be the top story. In fact, with today's population, over 37,000 people die each year in traffic accidents with an estimated 1.2 million accidents each year involving drivers using cell phones to converse. If nothing is done, traffic accidents are predicted to become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030. With the large population of people that populate the world today, it is not uncommon to see drivers swerving in their lane or barely dodging a pedestrian because they are not focused. To be specific, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that “more than 15 people are killed and more than 1,200 people are injured in crashes allegedly involving a distracted driver.” Victims of these preventable traffic accidents suffered minor injuries, but others suffered permanent damage or even died. Texting has also been blamed for all kinds of accidents such as train and subway crashes. In September 2008 there were twenty-five people. The problem with banning cell phones is that people have addictions and if you ban it, people will continue to do so. They will hide it and it will cause more accidents. Driving with distractions can be extremely dangerous, and driving safely is something more people should simply do. Texting while driving distracts drivers and makes them unaware of their surroundings. Texting while driving takes the driver's attention away from the road for a couple of seconds. In those seconds, the message could go off track and hit a child. Let's stop driving and texting.
