Television Programs There are many useful techniques especially in television programs and their opening sequences. They are used to grab the viewer's attention and at the same time create a great way to show what the next program is about. One such technique is the use of splitscreening; this is a very attractive way to convey the topic, tone or genres of a program. In the television soap 'Hollyoaks' the beginning shows a short clip of around thirty seconds to around a minute which gives a little lead into the episode, followed by the use of split projection in the opening credits. In this intro there is a blue background, showing a mellow tone while clips from other parts of past or future shows pass on the screen. It is used to "capture" viewers' attention by showing the most essential parts of the soap without revealing much of the plot or spoiling the plot. The use of all these techniques clearly shows the viewer that they are watching a soap opera about groups of people, mostly in their late teens to mid-twenties. The producers do this by mainly showing clips of these characters during the opening sequence, this would also be the target audience of the program "Hollyoaks". In the fake documentary "Operation Good Guys" the techniques are cleverly used to "deceive" viewers. They do this by first making the viewer believe that this program has a more serious tone by making it seem like a documentary about general police life. At the beginning of the program you see the police carrying out normal tasks which always go horribly wrong, which shows the humor behind it. The central part of the sheet or the whole. The signifier is the part that explains why that particular part is used. The meaning is that the production or program is shown and understood. Narrative structure is the way it is told or explained and can greatly influence the audience's response to the event or program. In a film a producer will make the audience feel sorry or show sympathy to make them feel closer or connected to the characters. A narrative code is the use of fights and explosions in an action film. Action codes are how the plot is resolved through the use of action whereas in a puzzle codes program it is solved through puzzles or mysteries. Three types of narrative are used guns and car chases in action films, the use of murders, mysteries and twists in a thriller and the use of monsters and horror in a scary film.
