In Notes from the Underground, Liza, the woman, is a prostitute, so she does exactly what UM wants her to do. This is another sign of gender-based roles. Not many times do you hear about a male prostitute. Under no circumstances is a prostitute a stable, well-paid job. This is the idea that women cannot earn enough money to support a family on their own. As for Linda in Death of a Salesman, she doesn't actually even have a "real" job beyond cleaning the house and cooking for Willy, Biff, and Happy. These are not real
