Establish the organizational context, strategy, culture and process for senior level coaching and mentoring. Peter Hill in his book "Concepts of Coaching" states this; “Coaching has arrived in the world of work with an immense impact and a surprising variety of approaches.” For the purposes of this article I will be referring to two organizations that have been affected by the surge in coaching and mentoring, their approaches to it and how they might benefit from having a program in place. One is a regional rowing club and the other is a charity providing further education, residential care and employment services for people with learning disabilities. My search to find a distinct definition between these two disciplines to date has found little agreement between the different thoughts and meanings from a variety of authors and online articles, creating confusion between the two elements. So, what do coaching and mentoring mean and how do they differ? Context, Meaning, Process and Skills of Mentoring The word mentor finds its context in a Greek myth, Homer's The Odyssey, when Odysseus entrusts his son to his servant, Mentor, telling him "teach him everything you know". (John Whitmore p13 'Coaching for Performance') For me mentoring is about nurturing talent and developing a person; guiding them through the learning stages and assisting them to perform high in their current and future roles. As part of my role, as a senior coach at the rowing club, I mentor a young coach as they work with people. Observing his relationship and the techniques he uses in communicating with youth, parents and adult members. Feedback from my observations is an important element of this process and listening to how he feels. As an assistant and instructor of some you… middle of the paper… without unnecessary interference from managers, thus relieving stress.2. Team meetings. Another strategy could be to hold regular team meetings. These should be well structured and timely with specific agendas aligned with the work. It's an ideal opportunity for staff to practice their leadership skills. It is an arena where business strategy can be conveyed. However, if unstructured and leadership unsupervised, it can lead to these meetings being undermined by general chatter and gossip. Team coaching here can actually help by keeping the sessions structured; the team focused on work-based issues, helping them learn to find solutions creatively and empowering employees to take a leading role themselves. Both forms above are valid and can work, however I believe, certainly initially, that team coaching and individual coaching can make them even more effective and sustainable.
