Community living is the traditional way of living that has been practiced over the years by the Pacific people and is observed to be declining due to the changes brought by modern society. The main reasons for this decline concern cultural, economic and social issues. First, this essay will examine cultural issues such as Westernization and intermarriage. Westernization involves many changes in cultural patterns and completely transforms the lives of individuals because it requires the destruction of indigenous culture and its replacement with a modern one in areas such as lifestyle, religion and language. Lifestyle changes have increased rapidly since the introduction of media in the Pacific. One example is the Fijian practice of fire walking in which men walk on hot stones barefoot, usually a ceremonial occasion but in recent years has become an event performed to entertain tourists.
