The hermeneutic experience occurs when the individual is willing to look at the world in a new way. A child is born who sees the world for the first time, in a new light. An individual is willing to “…no longer see people in their social rank, poor or rich, slave or free, men or women. All are equal before God” (Cooke and Macy 85). Once an individual accepts the completely new way of looking at the world, they are initiated into the Christian community (Cooke and Macy 85). Presence refers to the community and family of the person being baptized. They are recognizing the baptism of the individual and are striving to make him or her a faithful Christian (Cooke and Macy 85). The third element, maturation, is basically the individual being baptized fully recognizing and accepting what they are engaging in (Cooke and Macy 85). Once an individual is baptized, he exists to be of service to people. By being baptized, the individual now commits to the fourth element, service (Cooke and Macy 85). The final element of the ritual is friendship, once a person is baptized "...the community of faith, the church, is not fundamentally an organization but a collection of friends who are united in their fragmented faith in the presence of God..."
