Rise to power In 1923, Adolph Hitler became a leading member of the Nazi Party. This group had created their own private army called the SA or Brownshirts. In November of the same year, the Nazis staged a coup in Munich, the capital of Bavaria. This led to the arrest of Hitler and other leading figures. After his release, Hitler focused on legally gaining power by increasing the number of seats in the Reichstag. Hitler's party had 12 seats in the 1928 election, but 196 in the 1932 election.
