Men go to work, earn money, and spend it on electric bills, food, and things the family needs. In The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio, the father is the opposite of what men should do. Evelyn uses her jingle writing skills to win TV competitions. Evelyn's winnings in cash and produce keep the family afloat (Holden 1). The audience sees a mother, rather than an ideal father, step in to support the family. The mother is seen cooking, taking care of her ten children and husband and winning competitions while the father works as a train driver and spends his salary on alcohol. From “What are men for?” by Jared Diamond, states "... criticizing those men who provide better for themselves than their wives and children." (Composition and Research 1018). Evelyn's husband, Kelly, eases her pain by consuming alcohol. From “Why Men Don’t Last” by Natalie Angier, Angier cites outside sources such as Dr. Pollack of the Center for Men who states “Men in our culture are pretty much limited to a menu of three strong feelings: anger, triumph, and lust. " This means that men are not as emotional as women, otherwise they will be seen as a "sissy" (Composition & Research 1011). Kelly was a singer before he had an accident that destroyed his voice. Alcohol helps him deal with his pain and he is sad when his wife manages to sing and create lyrics for the jingle contest.
