Topic > An overview of the Toa Payoh neighborhood

The neighborhood we decided to evaluate was Toa Payoh. It is a mature neighborhood with people of all ages, from the very young to the elderly. The neighborhood is rather quiet, without large shopping centers. It is full of history which will be explored further later in the report. Say no to plagiarism. First, along the sidewalks we saw cigarette butts and garbage thrown on the floor. Furthermore, the water in Toa Payoh Park was cloudy and stagnant in some parts, which shows that maintenance is poor. It appears that some fountains that were in the water to prevent the water from becoming stagnant were not working. Finally there were leaves falling from the trees everywhere and in abundance. Even though this is a natural process, I still think an effort should be made to clean them up, or at least be swept away. Aside from all the trash and grime, the sidewalks were mostly clear of litter and the walkways were mostly clear of leaves. Overall the place wasn't bad with some areas needing improvement so we gave it a +2. Then, the maintenance of the place was also quite good. Most of the buildings had a nice coat of paint that had not worn off and the buildings were not dirty. The sidewalks were well maintained and everything was smooth and there were no holes in the ground. The playground and fitness stations were also well maintained and all stations worked and were not faulty. However, there were some parts of the place that had not been maintained. The Central Park tower was dirty and had black stains all over it. We also noticed that the bathroom was under renovation, so not available. However, there were some temporary toilets, there was a strong pungent smell coming from the bathroom and there was nowhere to wash your hands. However, we appreciated the effort that went into renovating the toilet and can't wait to see what the new renovated toilet will look like. Overall it was still good, so we gave it a +2. Afterwards, there were many services available for people of all ages throughout Toa Payoh. The place had things like fitness station and a park with open space for the elderly/young adults to do their morning exercises, there were also benches along the path so that if you needed to rest there was one . The fitness station was reserved for those over the age of thirteen, while the playground was reserved for those under the age of thirteen. This is very suitable for the elderly as they are the ones who get tired easily but still visit the park. Then there were playgrounds to entertain young children while their parents/grandparents exercised. Playgrounds had slides and swings, these some places on the swings were specialized for younger children who need a “harness seat”. This is extremely family friendly and the view of greenery all around is also pleasing to the eye. This creates a sense of belonging as they cater to the needs of different age groups, making them feel included. Next, a sense of place was created through iconic landmarks such as one of the last remaining dragon playgrounds in Toa Payoh. The dragon playgrounds were designed by Mr Khor Ean Ghee, who was previously a designer at HDB. The Dragon Playground is a distinctive feature that sets Toa Payoh apart from all other neighborhoods in Singapore. This unique icon is recognizable from all over Singapore as just the sight of the dragon playground brings back memories for many people. This makes Toa Payoh one.
