Topic > Concert Review – Matthew Yeakley Jazz Session

I attended Matthew Yeakley's jazz session at the Continental Club. It was a cloudy, cold and dark night, which put me in the mood to be indoors at an event jazz. Yeakley's jazz band consists of Matt on piano, Aaron on drums and Cooper on electric bass and Mike on trumpet. Everyone simply started with improvisations to test their instruments. The first song Yeakley played was It Felt Like a Sunday, which began with fast piano and drums with a touch of bass towards the end. At first I was surprised by how fast jazz can be, because I'm used to listening to old jazz, which was a little slower than usual. They started playing Missed It, with beautiful soothing piano at the beginning, then moved towards Yeakley playing guitar with very light drums. I liked how it had a soft tone at the beginning, but grew in intensity as it progressed towards the drums that dominated the song. Most of the audience was in their 30s and 40s, with a few young people in the audience. There was a very relaxed atmosphere inside, everyone tuned in and jammed to the beat. Throughout the evening, Mike talked about Miles Davis and his influence on him on the trumpet. He said he "gets chills every time he hears it." I didn't listen to Miles Davis much, but I know he was a major figure in changing jazz. The next song was called Fitness, which began with a soft piano with a double bass and light drums. It progressed into a much faster paced song with saxophone in the background. I really liked this song because it's much faster than the first one they played. It got very slow towards the middle, but steadily gained momentum with more bass and drums. Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on "Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned"? Get an original essay The piano actually contained the majority of the song. This song gave me the biggest chills out of all three because of how fast and smooth the melodies were. The next song was "A Place to Call Home", which began with drum lights and saxophone. Gradually the piano joined, but at the beginning the saxophone prevailed. The overall vibe of the song made it feel like something I would listen to while taking a morning walk on the beach looking at the ocean. There was a very calm feeling, which turned into a very energetic guitar towards the end. Aaron and Matt were guided by Yeakley as they progressed through the song to match the timing to their parts. I liked how the group relied on each other to improvise at times when they needed to improvise. This song was very different from the others due to its relaxed melodies. I still liked Fitness a lot more than this song, but this was definitely my second favorite. Even though I'm not used to jazz music, I'm happy to have been able to expose myself to the incredible performance of the Yeakley team. I never thought that jazz could evoke these feelings in me that I don't normally experience with hip hop and rap music. I can say there is so much passion involved in playing and creating their work. I'm happy I was able to experience it.
