Topic > Self-care theory by Dorothea Orem

According to Dortha Orem every human being needs to perform some tasks in daily life that are important for their survival, these tasks called self-care. The problem develops when the human being is unable to carry out this task alone or without the assistance of another person, this is called self-care deficit. Interestingly, the person does not need the nurse during self-care, but when a deficit occurs the nurse steps in and tries to correct that deficit by partially helping or completely performing that job if the client is so dependent. She also put into perspective the people who care for the individual at home or in a family perspective which she classifies as dependent care theory. Say no to plagiarism. The theory has the beauty of simplicity and easy to understand language if we compare it with other theorists. This theory is understandable by not highly educated providers and even they can implement it in daily practice. Orem explains that universal self-care is an activity of daily living that is of the utmost importance to human functioning and structural integrity. These ADLs include taking in air to breathe, taking in water, removing waste from the body, balancing activity and rest, and promoting optimal human functioning, whenever deviations from health occur a self-care deficit. To recover from this disease, the client needs to carry out some activities like consulting a doctor and taking prescribed measures. If he/she is able to meet these needs on his/her own, there is no need for the nurse to interfere. But the client is unable to play the role of nurse to participate and help complete the task. The nurse can help a client in 5 different ways. Take action or complete work for the patient. Guide the customer. Support customers. Cultivate an environment that promotes personal development. Teach customer skills. It is very easy to apply in daily nursing interactions. For example, a home nurse caring for a client who is quite strong and can use the bathroom without assistance, but the nurse provides her with the bed pan and asks her to use it so that the nurse behaves in contrary to Orem guidelines as it does not allow the patient to be independent and does not allow her to complete self-care. Similarly, if another patient is not in good strength but can still cry with assistance if the nurse holds her to one side and takes her to the bathroom, she is following Orem's theory since she is assisting the patient but without compromising his independence. Likewise, if the home health nurse sits with the patient, listens to her, guides her, and teaches her to overcome her self-care deficit, she is following Dorothea Orem's guidelines. According to research published in the journal Red Crescent which was conducted with a patient suffering from multiple sclerosis. The study design was a single-blind, randomized clinical trial in which the person doing the analysis was blinded to the study participants. This research involved a clinical study. 63 patients with multiple sclerosis were selected based on nonrandom sampling and then assigned to the two groups based on random assignment. In the intervention group, Orem's model was applied.
