Many types of oppression still occur in society today. People are forced to suffer these different types of oppression because of something they have no control over. Being born black, female or in the wrong place. Subject to violence, discrimination and hatred of others. In the book Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass there are many examples of oppression. The types of oppression that minority groups faced in the 1800s and still face today are colorism, sexism, educational deprivation, and misguided religion. Say no to plagiarism. Get an original essay In the book Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass, his master dies and he is taken with the rest of his masters, things he says " it was therefore necessary to make an appraisal of the property… I was immediately called for the appraisal ̈ .This supports my thesis about colorism because African Americans were forced to be slaves and treated like property. They had no rights and no control over their lives. People believed that God created blacks to serve them. This also refers to the poem The Little Black Boy by William Blake when they talk about whites being “pure”. In the message, when Frederick Douglass finally escaped and was looking for work , they said no because of his skin. Even though he was free from slavery, he was not free from discrimination. On page 68 Frederick Douglass stated: “I went for a caulking job; , among the white caulkers, who refused to work with me.” Today I can cite many cases where people were discriminated against for their appearance, people judged for the color of their skin. One example I discovered is that Ramarley Graham did not have a gun on him when a police officer named Richard Haste chased him into his house during an alleged drug bust gone awry and shot him dead in front of his family in his bathroom, all age of 18. Another is Gregory Hill Jr who was killed within seconds after police shot him in his garage. My last example is a news story I found from an article. The Target security guard was rightly fired for accusing an innocent African American woman of stealing. He thought she had stolen a bikini, so he made her lift her shirt and lower her pants to prove her innocence. In the speech Ain ́t I a Woman Sojourner Truth says “So the little man in black over there, says that women can “I don't have as many rights as men” This quote supports my thesis about the oppression of minority groups who used sexism at the time.Women did not have the same rights as men nor did they have the same opportunities.Women could not vote, retain their wages or sign a contract and after marriage women were not expected to take an interest only to their home and family. An example of sexism in the present day is professional sexism. Women are still considered inferior to men due to stereotypes in society caused by social role theory dominant and women as submissive. From an article entitled Sexism it was said: “Traditionally, the role of women in this society has been that of wife and mother. In most aspects of life, other than those involving domestic responsibilities and raising children, women have not always been guaranteed the same rights as men." People believe that men are.
