World hunger has been steadily declining for over a decade, yet a new United Nations report focusing on eight countries and regions shows that world hunger is still once increasing due to multiple factors. The number increased from 777 million in 2015 to 815 million in 2016, i.e. from 10.6% to 11%. There are three main causes of increased hunger. The first is the increase in violent conflicts around the world, which heavily impacts all aspects of human life. The second reason is extreme climate changes causing natural disasters such as floods and droughts. The third reason is the economic slowdown that can be observed in areas such as South America. Because of these factors, the UN has warned that the 2030 goal of ending all world hunger is no longer on track to be achieved and that more needs to be done. Global leaders and the United Nations are attempting to combat this rise in world hunger through aid, education, political pressure and diplomacy. Say no to plagiarism. These wars take a heavy toll on human lives and infrastructure which then impacts food production. The new UN report examined sixteen regions and countries devastated by conflict. In eight of these countries, more than a quarter of the population suffers from hunger. Yemen currently faces the worst situation among these eight nations, where 17 million people suffer from acute hunger. The United Nations called for increased efforts to prevent hunger through aid and to continue using diplomacy to help mitigate conflict. There is a desperate need for better and faster access in conflict zones to support those in need. Unfortunately, in every location where the United Nations conducted the study, attacks against aid workers are on the rise. Violence against workers often forces them to suspend their operations, putting civilians in need at risk. In other countries, humanitarian aid has been blocked by governments as a war tactic. In 2016, Sudan's government blocked humanitarian aid to parts of its rebel territory in hopes of starving rebel fighters. This left civilians trapped without water and food, worsening the famine situation which in 2017 was estimated at 20 million people starving. A similar situation occurred in Nigeria. The government has been fighting the Islamist group Boko Haram since 2009. The Nigerian government limits aid to areas controlled by Boko Haram which once again leads civilians to starvation. Security Council Resolution 2417 of 2018 sought to combat these situations by unequivocally condemning starvation as a method of warfare. It calls on all parties involved in conflicts to follow humanitarian law in order to minimize the impact on civilians. The joint UN agency recognizes that “the millions of men, women and children who suffer from hunger as a result of armed conflict will not be reduced unless and until these fundamental principles are followed.” However, only time will tell whether all groups in conflict zones will comply with resolution 2417. Extreme weather conditions are another major factor in the rise of world hunger. Climate shocks such as droughts and floods are caused by extreme weather that scientists link to global warming. Two examples are El Nino and La Nina. Extreme weather conditions have an impact..
