Tone in literature is used to describe the speaker's attitude and feelings towards the written topic. Readers can understand the speaker's tone in just a line or two, this makes it one of the most essential tools in poetry. A clear example of tone is displayed in “The Crow” when the speaker states, “There is darkness and nothing more. Peering into the depths of that darkness, I stood there wondering for a long time, fearing” (24-27).
