Named after Canada's largest waterfall, the city of Niagara Falls is one of the most popular tourist attraction cities in North America. Since Niagara Falls was incorporated as a city in 1904, it has continued to grow not only in tourism but also in manufacturing, retail and commercial sectors. Towards the end of the 17th century, French and British travellers, soldiers and fur traders began to settle in Niagara Falls. During the American Revolution of 1775, Niagara Falls became "the hub" of all British and Loyalist activity; the number of settlers increased rapidly, creating a dangerous loss of food and other supplies ("The Chronicles of"). After the American Revolutionary War ended in 1783 and Newark (present-day Niagara on the Lake) became the first capital of Upper Canada, the population of Niagara Falls continued to increase ("The Chronicles of",). Demand for local goods and services also increased, leading to the construction of the first lumber and grist mill along the Niagara River bank. The beginning of the 19th century was marked by the War of 1812 between the Americans and the English. The war continued for three years and finally ended on March 15, 1815 with an unclear victory as both sides had suffered great losses in thousands of dead and wounded soldiers, and nearly all the settlements along the Niagara frontier were destroyed (" Post War of", ). This, however, did not prevent the population of Niagara Falls from increasing to nearly twelve hundred people, mostly farming and fishing for a living. Around 1820, Niagara Falls became a famous scenic attraction. Tourists began to return. By 1850, approximately sixty thousand people visited Niagara Falls annually; this issue…half of the paper…has been opened for business respectively (Gayler & Jackson, 2012). The Construction Along with the Niagara Parks Commission, Casino Niagara and Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort are Niagara Falls' largest employers in today's economy. Niagara Falls has a dynamic economic history ranging from tourism to manufacturing, retail and commerce. Niagara Falls not only enjoys beautiful scenery, but also an ideal location, close to the major US and Canadian market, the Greater Toronto Area, as well as a skilled regional workforce graduated from local post-secondary institutions such as Brock University and Niagara College, and a multimodal transportation network that includes waterways, rail, highways and airports.
