Of all the modern poetry we were assigned to read, I must say that, like many others in the class, I found Giuseppe Ungaretti's poems the most entertaining of all because I found his poems the simplest to understand and the easiest to relate to. A common theme that seemed to persist in many of Ungaretti's poems is that he seemed to write a lot about the death and pain that constantly surrounded him in the environment, perhaps indicating that he was a soldier who was writing these poems during a time of war. Evidence of this is found in the poem Vigil, in which Ungaretti describes spending “an entire night crouched next to one of “[their] massacred men,” presumably a fellow soldier brutally massacred during a battle (Ungaretti, p.1). ' Initially, when I read the poem for the first time, I was quite confused as to why Ungaretti would dedicate an entire poem to describing a seemingly meaningless star However, after reading the poem a second time, I immediately got started to realize The poem, like many of Ungaretti's other poems, must have had a deep inner meaning. Therefore, it seems that the poem was most likely about a person whom Ungaretti truly loved and that the "star" was simply a form of it. symbolism for his love, which seems to be the main theme of this poem One of the main reasons why Star was my favorite is partly because of all the question marks it leaves and the many different possible interpretations that can be made of it. draw For example, while it seems clear that Ungaretti wrote this poem about someone he loves, who that person actually is is not so clear and is open to interpretation. It could be about a woman he is deeply in love with or maybe even one of her family
