According to the MOHO, the social environment refers to the social groups, relationships, or community that a person interacts with interactively (Kielhofner, 2008). A relationship is also defined as a collection of people who are interdependent and bear similar values, interests and behaviors. Parental death, family network restructuring, and unemployment are more likely to occur during midlife (Nicolson, 2014). This loss of roles leads to a lack of purpose, identity, and structure in daily life. More specifically, unemployment has been shown to be linked to health problems related to stress, depression, and substance abuse (Kielhofner, 2008). A role helps us shape who we are and direct what we do.
