“The white man had indeed brought a crazy religion…” (153) thought Okonkwo in Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. In the novel, the main character Okonkwo and his son Nwoye experience sudden changes in their village due to the arrival of the white men. They once started their life in their native village, Ibo, of Umoufia. After Okonkwo commits an accidental murder, he is forced into exile in Mbanta for seven years. During the years of his exile, Okonkwo learns of white missionaries who appeared in Umuofia, who then come to Mbanta. The missionaries promoted Christianity in both villages and some villagers even converted from Ibo culture to Christian culture. Finally, after seven years, Okonkwo and Nwoye return to new Umuofia, where little Ibo culture remains. Okonkwo and Nwoye react differently to the change in the village. They have different perceptions about the influence of white men because they have had distinct life experiences that have shaped their views on life.
