Nye says, “I am humble in my country's pain and I am furious.” (169) Nye feels as if her country has failed her by showing terror to the world, yet she knows that her country is full of good neighbors. People see Middle Easterners as the enemy causing more pain in our country than they need to. Racism affects many and it seems like everyone is a little racist. The smallest things can affect the way we think and see the world. Your parents have a great influence on the way you think critically. Nye talks about his father and states that "there is no one like him and there are thousands like him - kind Arab dads who make everyone around the table laugh,..." (169). This shows how you see your family as the people you make judgments about and how they perceive the world around them. Your parents have the greatest influence on you because they raise you by teaching you how to live. If your parents teach you hatred towards a certain race, it's not normal, this is creating racism. If you grew up hating a certain ethnicity, religion, or country, you can't change that person
