This was well demonstrated during one of the opening scenes where members of the Nazi party are compiling lists of all the citizens who identify as Jews. They used typewriters and the camera was fixated on the typing of each name. There is a similar scene later in the film where Oskar dictates the names while Stern types them. The camera angle is once again fixated on all these Jewish names. These two scenes made up of written words are very similar in description but substantially different in context. Hitler's list and Schindler's list, in other words one is a death list, the other a life list. As Stern says, “The list is overwhelmingly positive. The list is life. All around its edges is the gulf." as opposed to Hitler's list which represents absolute evil. The use of the written word effectively demonstrates the emergence of liberation in a time of desperation with the contrast of these two lists.
