Demonstrates the possibility of becoming something when you come from nothing. Although the Walls' children did not lead a glamorous life, it was rarely boring. Rex and Rose Mary continually teeter on the edge of the thoughtful and the chaotic, putting their children in situations that children shouldn't be in and giving them a childhood from which they must recover. As unfortunate as they are, these moments are what shaped the Walls children into who they are today, just as anyone's childhood plays a role in who they become. The desperation in their lives was a driving factor, something that essentially forced them to succeed. Their parents taught them how to be carefree and adventurous, two things many people forget, they also taught them not to act like adults, which, in some crazy way, might also be a blessing.
