Topic > An Icebreaker Interview with a Visitor from Mainland China

I have been prejudiced against visitors from Mainland China, as many Hong Kongers have. There are reports that they behave inappropriately during their weekly visits. They have adopted many uncivilized behaviors, such as ignoring rules everywhere and peeing in public. After an interview with a visitor from mainland China, Mr. Lee, I realize that it may be a stereotype and needs to be stopped to have less conflict within China and a harmonious society. Before doing the interview, I asked some Hong Kong teenagers about their opinions towards mainland China. Most of them don't like them and think they are unhygienic, uncivilized and rude like I think. This shows that many teenagers in Hong Kong may have the same opinion as me. They said they don't like mainland Chinese even though they have never visited mainland China. So how come they can make a judgment? One reason to explain is that our thinking is influenced by the media and the general public. The media has told us about many inappropriate behaviors from mainland China. And the public has organized many protests and campaigns against mainland China. They feel that their interests are being affected through various means, such as education and social welfare, which will also affect ours. That's why more and more people hate them. I would like to know what they think of us, but it is difficult to find a mainland Chinese willing to accept the interview. After several hours, I finally found an interviewee. Lee is a visitor living in Guangzhou; this is his first time visiting Hong Kong. He was not willing to accept my interview before I said this is homework. The reason for this is that they were told that Hong Kong people feel h...... middle of paper...... Chinese, our history, technology and institutional network are different. We have been under the British government, so our culture has been influenced by British culture and we also have more advanced technology and different education. Therefore it is true that we are more educated and have a better standard of living than some Chinese citizens. It is inappropriate to have prejudices and stereotypes towards other cultures. We should tolerate cultural differences and try to understand them more through various methods such as searching on the Internet and chatting with them directly. We should have intercultural competence during the conversation to avoid bad feelings in both of us. We should not behave rudely and show hatred towards other people's cultures. We should respect others; respect other cultures to have a better and harmonious society.
