Topic > Symbolism in How to Be Drawn by Terrance Hayes - 727

As with every reader, perspective is key and is different from everyone else's. From my perspective, I see two sides of who the speaker might be. The poem states “When I went out as a man of God” (10) concludes that the speaker could be a priest, which actually ties the entire poem together. Initially, I had thought that the speaker might be a man who has lost a significant person in his life and who blames God for taking that person away from him, but instead it is the priest who is closed from the outside and cannot judge but simply believe that God's plan is right, even when it doesn't seem right. At the beginning of the poem, the speaker referenced the song "I Want to Be More Like Jesus" by Keith Green, the song is about how Jesus can live with all the sin and how he handles it so well, and Green wants to be like Jesus because he cannot bear all the sin he has endured. This song is strongly connected to the poem because the priest sees with the naked eye all the sin in the world and can't do anything about it, which adds a lot of weight to his morals and life.
