The nonfiction book Protecting Children from Violence: Evidence-Based Interventions, by Jim Lampinen and Kathy Sexton-Radek, contains shocking findings from past and current research on the issue of atrocities against children children. Jim Lampinen holds a PhD in cognitive psychology. Kathy Sexton-Radek is a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of Illinois. This writer chose the title as part of a writing assignment in a psychology course. After reading the contents of the book, this student couldn't help but ask the question… When is “enough”? The story opens in a school where one of the authors gave a presentation on the issue of missing children. At the end, a parent approached the speaker expressing deep concern about the complexity of the world and the fact that his children must grow up in it. Over the past twenty years or so there has been growing concern among the public and professionals about the safety and well-being of children. Physical violence against children is a complex and wide-ranging vision. Skinnider (1998) found that violence against children is “deliberate behavior by people against children that is likely to cause physical or psychological harm” (p. 1). That said, violence against children involves a variety of actions around the world that date back to ancient times.
