We need to reconsider our strategy on how to deal with plastic waste because we cannot afford to wait for landfills to malfunction before we can say that these problems are affecting our well-being. We need to change our ethical stance by thinking long term about what our actions are doing to stop practicing techniques that only bloat for a short period of time because they can lead to major consequences. For example, if we maintain the current status quo, we will eventually run out of space for plastic, both in recycling plants and in landfills, so the landfill will become saturated with toxins and we will continue to release chemicals into the atmosphere causing harm. to the biosphere. And we certainly can't always create new landfills every time we reach the maximum storage level, in which case we will run out of space on land and probably return to the ocean to dump the waste. In fact, the ocean already has a dump of waste larger than the state of Texas floating in the Pacific Ocean, namely the gyres. So instead of producing plastic, which can only be recycled a few times, damaging the biosphere and causing a toxic saturation, we can produce materials that are completely recyclable over and over again so we don't have to waste anything.
