In the 1830s and 1840s and beyond, there is a Second Great Awakening. The Second Great Awakening had a major impact on American society. Below I will describe what the Great Awakening was and how it changed life in America. In essence, the Great Awakening was a religious awakening. It started in the South. Tented camps were set up that revolved around lively gatherings that would last days. These camp meetings were highly emotional and multitudes of people were filled with the Spirit of God. These meetings were sponsored primarily by Methodists, Baptists and Presbyterians and met the social and spiritual needs of the frontier. Because it was difficult for Baptists and Methodists to support local churches, they solved the problem by recruiting uneducated people to spread the word of God to their neighbors. The camp meetings ended up fostering "extended meetings" in local churches. In the North we have witnessed a different religious awakening. Reform was popping up all over the Northeast.
