College Lecture HallIntroduction I didn't always take classes online, I went to class every day and listened to the lectures given by my professors in person. I've had many great experiences with classroom learning, but I've also had some less than great experiences. Those less than stellar experiences were classes where the professor taught only through lectures and tests. The two experiences I will use as examples are very different from each other, one is a great example of learning where the environment used an approach environment and the other is a very bad example that used an avoidance environment. Example of approach environment According to our text an approach environment is “an environment in which the customer feels comfortable and wants to spend time”. (Fisk, 2014) I took a classroom management course last year and had a great experience. There were many elements that contributed to making this classroom experience an approachable experience. First of all there were no individual desks but groups of tables and chairs. Before the lesson began I could tell that this lesson would encourage group interaction and discussions. I later noticed that there were posters on the wall with interesting quotes, ideas and mottos from different businesses. I was encouraged by this because I thought it would be a creative learning environment. Finally, the professor led the class in group discussions rather than in lectures. Example of Avoidance Environment The text describes an avoidance environment as "an environment that the customer finds undesirable and unappealing." (Fisk, 2014) The course I took, which is a great example of this, is the college algebra course I took last spring. There were many elements of avoidance that interfered... middle of paper... addressing attrition, these positive impressions can help reduce dropout rates." (Rethinking the Classroom: Spaces Designed for Active Learning and Engaged Learning and Teaching, 2015) The room I was in was large and cold. College could transform this element by only having large classes in large classrooms and teaching smaller classes in smaller classrooms or libraries given excellent examples of approach elements and environments as well as avoidance elements and environments. Turning negatives into neutral or positive ones seems simple but would also come at a cost everyone understands foresight. I will say this, my grade was better in the class that had an environment and approach elements.
